WAIT WAIT WAIT shut the fu** up about socialized health care.

themiddle:

Sounds like you are feeling pretty agitated about this. And if you truly think that we are getting a value for our system, then I am with you on your comments. But I do not believe that your money is being spent properly. I feel concerned for the education and prison system the most. Mail and highways have worked in the past. And I agree corporate management of healthcare needs government oversight. I am just not feeling that investment into a new program during the current economic crisis is frugal. I am needing to hear more reasons supporting socialized medicine, before I can sign off on that ticket.

(Apologies to anyone whose dashboard I’m throwing up on.  I would use Disqus or email, however it’s not being presented as an option.)

I’m not agitated at all, I’ve just read enough not to drink the Kool-Aid that it’s as simple as “Socialism = Bad and Capitalism = Good.”

The question you have to ask yourself is whether the private sector can do it better.  In many answers where the motive of profit is in direct conflict with the motive of progress or personal protection, that answer is no.  If someone was monetarily dis-incentivized to put their interests before yours, then maybe there should be some overall socialization for societal good.

Fires?  Healthcare?  Education?  Civil Services?  Infrastructure?  Not places where you want someone cutting corners to save a couple bucks, or deciding whether it’s in their best interest to deny you the services you (or the country as a whole) needs.

Capitalism, in its purest form is indistinguishable from a sociopath.  Does that make it inherently bad?  No.  It does mean that you take that into account when someone’s offering you a service for a price? Of course.

In any other industry it’s called “conflict of interest,” in politics, it’s generally interchangeably referred to as “socialist” or “communist” - usually by individuals who don’t understand the difference between two - and spit out with the same derisive tone that one uses on a child who’s wet himself in public.

To a thinking person it’s called not letting profits be the only motive, as a society driven only by profits tears itself apart in search for more.

About

I do lots of things. I'm kind of weird that way.

First and foremost, I'm the Director of Content Partnerships at Blip, where you can discover the best in original web series.

Before that, I ran a consulting company focused on entertainment and government entities called Spytap Industries. In a previous life I helped create United Talent Agency's online division - the first major agency division devoted to representing and monetizing online content.

I also contribute to Here's Some Awesome, a collaborative video curation site that showcases the awesome in online video.

From time to time I write essays on topics of interest from politics, to the future of mass media, to the effects that online content and piracy are having on traditional media. They normally go here. (Latest example: "On Bullying")

This is my personal blog, So while it probably doesn't need to be said, all of the opinions here are solely my own or those of the people I reblog.
