Okay, now I actually am nostalgic. Long story short, in the pre-Napster days, I’d managed to get my hands on a digital copy of the European release (I’m pretty sure I got it from some shady-ass section of Hotline, now that I think about it.) This song in particular really hit me for some reason - I don’t know why, but it really resonated.

Just before the CD was pressed though, the song was pulled and replaced with an mostly instrumental version that left the chorus intact while stripping out the rest of the lyrics. When I finally bought the album, I thought it was defective, but upon peer confirmation of its marginalization, I realized I’d found something really special.

A couple months later when Third Eye Blind came through Sacramento, I drove down from college with a friend of mine to see them play. They introed this song with “We’re gonna play something a little special for you guys. Most of you have never heard this version, cause we don’t really play it that often, but we really like it so we’re gonna play it for you.”

When they started playing, those few of us (maybe a hundred or so total) who had downloaded the album sang along. We gave each other knowing looks and I’d like to think that even the band was in on it. The rest of the crowd just stared at us in total confusion and envy. Afterwards, Steven Jenkins just laughed and said “Nice.”

Man, I haven’t thought about that concert in ages, though it was one of the better concert experiences of my life. So yeah, nostalgia accomplished and thanks for bringing back some good memories.

About

I do lots of things. I'm kind of weird that way.

First and foremost, I'm the Director of Content Partnerships at Blip, where you can discover the best in original web series.

Before that, I ran a consulting company focused on entertainment and government entities called Spytap Industries. In a previous life I helped create United Talent Agency's online division - the first major agency division devoted to representing and monetizing online content.

I also contribute to Here's Some Awesome, a collaborative video curation site that showcases the awesome in online video.

From time to time I write essays on topics of interest from politics, to the future of mass media, to the effects that online content and piracy are having on traditional media. They normally go here. (Latest example: "On Bullying")

This is my personal blog, So while it probably doesn't need to be said, all of the opinions here are solely my own or those of the people I reblog.
