kl7 replied to your quote: I didn’t expect this, but the epic dishonesty of…

The GOP knows it has the media by the balls because they can cry liberal bias when they’re called on their BS and point to the dems not getting picked on because by and large, the dems don’t lie outright like they do.

I say it a lot, but they don’t get to levy inaccurate claims that they’ve themselves invented as if they’re accurate - and no one should care if they do. The “media” isn’t “liberal” - that’s an invention used to justify personal and financial bias. No one should care any more than if the GOP decided to levy a decades-long attack on me for being an automobile. It doesn’t matter how often it’s repeated, it’s an invented accusation and should by-all-rights be laughed off at each and every turn.

But it’s not - because the media isn’t liberal.

At some point in the past few decades “the news” became less about accurately informing and more about turning a profit (preferring money to any greater good sounds like liberal ideals, doesn’t it?) News became part of larger corporations - and corporations are generally devoted to the singular missions of making money and increasing shareholder value at close to whatever cost. By way of example, MSNBC - the “most liberal” news organization by accusation - is owned by G.E. - one of the largest weapons manufacturers in the world. If I know anything about parent companies it’s that they never have any say over the operations of the businesses they own, and that of all the multinational corporate conglomerates, the nuclear and traditional weapons manufacturing corporations are the really ultra-liberal ones.

So while I agree that the GOP has “the media” by the balls, it’s certainly not because (IMHO anyway) they’re worried about being called out on a perception of “liberal bias.” The GOP has “the media” by the balls because “the media” is an industry tuned to make profit - news now included - and multinational corporate conglomerates tend not to come in “liberal.”

This does a good job summing up the problem with the media today.
  3. kl7 said: As a member of the media, I know there’s no real bias, just fact. I just meant it was a go to line for many members of the GOP and its followers. However, your point about it being owned by corporate conglomerates is absolutely accurate.

About

On my better days, I call myself an entrepreneur. Mostly I like to play in the nexus of technology and the Internet.

I run a consulting company that works with entertainment and government entities called Spytap Industries. S.I. has worked with a broad base of clientele including feature films, TV series, A-list talent, online content creators, Multi Channel Networks, The Department of Defense, DARPA, and The Congressional Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction and Terrorism (CPWMD).

I'm also the CEO of a stealth startup working to power the next phase of mainstream media (more on that soon.) At nights and on weekends I build things that I think should exist (online and off.)

Prior to this, I was the Director of Content Partnerships at Blip Networks, where you can discover the best in original web series. In a previous life I helped create United Talent Agency's online division - the first major agency division devoted to representing and monetizing online content.

From time to time I write essays on topics of interest such as politics, education, the future of mass media, and the effects that online content and piracy are having on traditional media. They normally go here.

I also contribute to Here's Some Awesome, a collaborative video curation site that showcases awesome online video.

This is my personal blog, So while it probably doesn't need to be said, all of the opinions here are solely my own or those of the people I reblog.
