Barrett Garese: Seven days of fitness madness.

spytap:

So one again, I’ve found myself inspired by Taryn O’Neill to actually act on something I’ve been thinking of doing (damn her and her pesky actioning of items.)

Ever since I joined blip, I’ve been slacking off on my workouts. When I was in total control of my schedule, I had a routine of 10am…

Seven for Seven.

Well to be technical about it, I was 6.5 for 7 - yesterday at Krav Maga I rolled my ankle halfway through and could barely walk (its still about twice its size today) but I’m gonna upgrade that to a full point because I didn’t let it stop me from going to the gym today.

Now, I plan to rest for a couple days and let my body recover a bit. A couple days off to rest and ice my ankle will be welcome.

Five for five thus far. Only two days left to go. I can already see a difference.

Day two: in the bag.

7am Krav Maga isn’t fun, but at the very least you know that when you catch an elbow to the cheek and a kick to the groin before 7:30, the worst part of your day’s probably already over.

Seven days of fitness madness.

So one again, I’ve found myself inspired by Taryn O’Neill to actually act on something I’ve been thinking of doing (damn her and her pesky actioning of items.)

Ever since I joined blip, I’ve been slacking off on my workouts. When I was in total control of my schedule, I had a routine of 10am workouts scheduled into my calendar. But that’s the thing about routines - they can get interrupted by an understandable inability for your new employer to accept your coming in at noon-ish. So I’ve been more sporadic with my workouts, and less set with any actual routine. Coupled with my earlier injuries, it’s lead to a schedule of “less than I’d like” for my workouts, and a noticeable slide in my overall fitness.

So this week, inspired by Taryn’s 5toFit project, I’m launching my own 7-day-straight asskicking endeavor. I didn’t name it, but it essentially amounts to actually putting appointments into my calendar and announcing it publicly, thereby opening myself up to shame and ridicule should I fail to follow through.

I’ll be alternating days of 60-90 minutes of weights at the gym with 60 minutes of Krav Maga, with the exception of the weekend which will be Krav both days. It’ll be tough, because it’ll also mean waking up at 6:30m to make the 7am Krav classes on Tuesday and Thursday so I can make it into work at a reasonable hour.

So here’s my pledge for this week: 7 straight days of working out - three at the gym, and four at Krav Maga. They’re in my calendar, I’m committed, and hopefully I’ll reap the benefits. It’s a good start to what will hopefully kickstart me into finding a new routine.

The best news? Day one is already in the can.

On holding, folding, walking away, and running. And Adapting.

60tosexy:

I try to go to the gym three times a week. For the two years I was running my company, I made time on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to spend an hour or 90 minutes sweating and lifting heavy things. I would even schedule it into my calendar so I could book my meetings around it. I would wake up, do some work from 8-10:30, change, and go to the gym from 11-12:15 or so, then come back home and shower/eat lunch/get in the car for any 1pm meeting. I might have. The gym gave my day structure, forced me to handle certain things in a timely manner in the morning, and allowed for a mid-day break to clear my head. Perfect.

Originally for Season 5 I was planning on also using my Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays to work on cardio, since one of my goals this season is to drop 7-10 pounds while (hopefully) not losing any of the strength I’ve worked so hard to gain. Since I hate running (I fucking hate it so goddamned much) I went to check out Krav Maga; it’s close to my house and I’ve always had a dream of being Jason Bourne. The class schedule would work perfectly for my little schedule I’d set up and I’d be working out 6 days a week in various forms - awesome.

Then, some changes happened - I accepted a job offer. Earlier this week I started that new job; one that involved me actually going to an office five days a week. I didn’t know how this would affect my schedule, but I knew that I would have to adapt it to a certain degree because they certainly weren’t paying me to take 90 minutes off at 11 to go lift weights. (Also there’s no shower at the office, and I don’t like showering in the locker rooms.)

So, enter adaptation and experimentation mode: Krav Maga is probably out for now, unless I wanted to go to the 7am classes (uh, I don’t.) 8am workouts were in, with a firm 60 minute time limit to allow me to come home, shower, and get into the office by 10am. Let’s see how this would work.

So Rob and I set out to hit the gym and push ourselves to do in 60 minutes what we normally do in 75 or so. And we did. And we felt awesome. Until the next day.

I’d pushed myself too hard, and my lower back was hurting just enough to make me concerned. So I did what I frequently recommend to other people: I took a day off. I didn’t go on Friday like I’d planned to, pushing it back a day to today. And my back feels better today. Granted I probably won’t be deadlifting (I think, we’ll see) but I also won’t be lying on the ground icing my back while cursing my ability to routinely make very poor decisions.

Fitness is a long-term project - be willing to consider yourself an ever-evolving target for improvement. In 60toSexy we break it up into 60 day seasons to make setting goals more digestible, but that finish line shouldn’t be the end point to either stop or push all your energy.

So here’s my takeaway: be flexible, be adaptable, and listen to your body. Challenges are fun, but don’t push yourself to the point where you burn out or injure yourself. Take a day or two to rest and recover so that when you do choose to push yourself, you can get the most out of it.

60 to Sexy: Season 4 Announcement and Details

60tosexy:

60toSexy started out very simply: Rudy and I wanted to get in shape. Like any other aspect of life which is worth doing, that required planning, dedication, inspiration, and perseverance. As we’re both nerds, we naturally turned to the internet to help us with all aspects of that project. In doing…

Happy Birthday to me. :)
Yeah, I’m a little late to my own party (barely got it in within the month) but these just became my birthday present to myself.
Same color too.  If I’m going to be rocking “shoes” with toe spaces, I’m damn sure not going to be shy about it.  They’re just for running /sports though.  I’ll get a black pair of the classics if I decide I need a day-to-day pair.  Either way, I’m looking forward to posting a review soon.
Goodbye barefoot running blisters/bleeding/bees. Hello more (mostly) barefoot running.

Barefoot Running: Episode 2

Calves still destroyed from last week, I was favoring the right very heavily and hoped to “work it out” as everything warmed up.  5 minutes into the run, though, I had to stop due to excruciating pain.  The soles of my feet still need to toughen up as well, I’m thinking of taking my dad’s advice and doing some beach running for a while, but before I do, I think I’m going to have to wait a couple weeks to let my calves repair.

I’m frankly a little worried I tore something the first time around.  I’ve rarely had soreness last 10 days, but perhaps I really am just that unused to the new running style that the tendons, muscles, and ligaments were put under a good deal more stress than they’re used to.

Still debating the VFF VS Barefoot decision.  Maybe I’ll make them a birthday present to myself.

It’s good to have goals; it’s better to meet them.

Five months ago, on February 15th, I decided to get my ass in shape.

I was the heaviest I’ve ever been at 175lbs and wanted to get back down to my senior year of high school fighting weight of 155; aka: what’s written on my driver’s license.  I gave myself 3 months to do so; in two months I hit my goal.

May 1st, I gave myself another 3 month goal: a single digit percentage of bodyfat by August 1st.

Today, realizing that I was coming into the home stretch, I had the very nice trainers at my gym measure my body-fat to see what I had to do over the next ten days to reach my goal.  The verdict:

9.9%

I checked the piece of paper again.

9.9% body-fat.

Whoa.  It’s as close as you can get, but I’m counting it firmly in the win column.  After just five months of work, I’ve dropped from the heaviest I’ve ever been, to the best shape of my life.

I’ve got two and a half weeks before I leave for a week on the Outer Banks with Beth and her family.  My new goal is a short term one: I’m gonna see what I can do between now and then; how much further can I get in the next 2.5 weeks…

About

I do lots of things. I'm kind of weird that way.

First and foremost, I'm the Director of Content Partnerships at Blip.tv, where you can discover the best in original web series.

Before that, I ran a consulting company focused on entertainment and government entities called Spytap Industries. In a previous life I helped create United Talent Agency's online division - the first major agency division devoted to representing and monetizing online content.

I also contribute to Here's Some Awesome, a collaborative video curation site that showcases the awesome in online video.

From time to time I write essays on topics of interest from politics, to the future of mass media, to the effects that online content and piracy are having on traditional media. They normally go here. (Latest example: "On Wikileaks")

This is my personal blog, So while it probably doesn't need to be said, all of the opinions here are solely my own or those of the people I reblog.
